After your pup has had a long stretch of ruff days, what they need is a vacation—and you probably don’t need much convincing to take a few days off yourself. With the entire U.S. as an option, what are the best dog-friendly vacations for you and your pup?

There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing your dog-friendly vacation:

When you check these off your list, you can be sure you and your pooch are about to have the best vacay! Let’s explore some of the most dog-friendly destinations in the U.S.

San Diego, California

For the beach-loving dog and owner, San Diego is an ideal travel destination. With miles of sandy shoreline and beautiful views, both you and your pup can romp and play in the sun, cool off in the ocean, then take a nap under an umbrella.

There are many beach options to choose from, including Dog Beach—sounds perfect for Fido! Besides the beach, San Diego offers other dog-friendly activities, such as dog parks at Balboa Park, a hiking trail at Cowles Mountain, and simply walking the streets of Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. Your pup will never want to leave!

Tampa, Florida

As another beach-themed destination on the opposite side of the U.S., Tampa has a lot to offer for you and your furry companion. Not only is it warm year-round, but there is also an area on the beach—Picnic Island Beach Dog Park—dedicated to canine visitors. Your dog is able to go off-leash, and the water is pretty shallow for better peace of mind.

If you’re into cruises, Tampa offers the dog-friendly Shell Key Shuttle Sunset Cruise, which lasts about an hour and a half. After your relaxing cruise, hit up Square 1 Burgers and grab a human and dog menu. Your pup is about to chow down on some fine dining!

Colorado Springs, Colorado

Moving away from the beach scene, Colorado Springs is a great vacation destination for humans and their canines. For one, it’s home to the first and only restaurant in Colorado to allow dogs to eat inside with their owners—Behold, Pub Dog Colorado. It also has a huge outdoor, off-leash area for socializing.

Once you’re both fueled for the day, go for a hike in Garden of the Gods Park. Choose from numerous hiking trails and let your pup’s nose go wild. To wind down, go on a car ride together to the top of Pikes Peak. End your eventful day at one of the many dog-friendly hotels and resorts within the city.

Long Island, New York

Looking around the northeast coast, Long Island is a great getaway for you and your furry friend. If your pup likes the outdoors, take a walk or hike at one of the many parks and historic sites. There are also dog-friendly beaches to explore.

There are plenty of dog-friendly establishments in the area, whether you’re taking the ferry or stopping for food. Be sure to look up local events during the time you are visiting—there are often many doggie-themed activities taking place! Long Island is the perfect vacation for the nature-loving dog and owner.

Austin, Texas

As one of the most dog-friendly cities in the country, Austin has so much to offer canine travelers! Do you and your pup enjoy being around the water? Rent a kayak or paddleboard and play in Lady Bird Lake. Many of the establishments are open to pets, including multiple restaurants, parks, and even the state capitol’s lawn.

If you’re into yoga, join in at Austin Doga to stretch alongside your pooch. You have to buy a souvenir before you leave, so be sure to stop by the Barton Creek Farmers Market for a doggie treat.
